Since this is our first blog, we thought it might be interesting to delve into the actual origins of escape games. We’ll take a look at some of the first escape games created, what’s led to their growing popularity, and predict where they may end up five or ten years from now.
Where Did Escape Games Come From?
Although it’s difficult to nail down exactly where modern escape games originate from, it’s not difficult to see where they got their inspiration from. Scavenger hunts, haunted houses, puzzles, and even video games have all created an interest for something interactive and team-based like a live-action escape room. Some people would cite the first escape game as a video game called Crimson Room. Created by Japanese developer Toshimitsu Takagi in 2004, this game places a single player into a room with one goal: escaping. Although this game didn’t offer much in the way of challenging puzzles or interactivity, it sparked an interest in the concept and started a new genre of video games called Takagism or as it’s more commonly known in the United States, “Escape The Room.”
In 2007, Japanese company SCRAP was the first to take this idea and make it a “live-action” experience. In these new escape game experiences, players entered a themed room where they needed to escape within the allotted time while solving puzzles along the way. Shortly after, escape rooms began to spread throughout Asia, Europe, and eventually, the rest of the world.
Why Are They So Popular?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past five years, you’re probably well aware of the increase in popularity of escape rooms. They’re popping up all over the world and for good reason! You’re probably pretty familiar with challenging puzzles such as Sudoku, crossword puzzles, and the like.
Although puzzles like these can be fun and challenging, they’re not too terribly exciting, and they can get boring pretty quick. Unlike these traditional puzzles, escape rooms put you in a story-focused and era-themed room that challenges you to escape within an allotted time (usually around 45 minutes to an hour). The main reason for the rise in popularity of escape rooms is that they’re more of a social activity than traditional puzzle games. Most escape games require two or more players meaning you’ll have to work together if you want to make it out in time.
Another thing that paved the way for modern escape rooms is the lack of variability in other puzzle games. Traditional puzzle games can get stale after a while because once you know how they work, they lose a lot of the challenge. With escape rooms, however, each room has a different theme, story, puzzles, and mysteries to solve, so you’ll always find something new to challenge you and your friends.
What’s Next For Escape Rooms?
Now that you know a little bit about where escape rooms came from and what makes them popular, you may be wondering where they will go in the future. Although it’s ultimately up to individual creators the direction they will take with their escape games, many people anticipate virtual reality becoming a big part of the experience. Virtual reality allows escape room creators to get more creative, especially when it comes to creating rooms that are both interactive and cinematic. In our virtual reality escape rooms here at Chambers Escape Games, you’ll be able to explore the vastness of space, the depths of the ocean, or a medieval fantasy-themed world.
